Q-Bot at TheHeat Climate Technology Festival

Author: Samantha Beacham

On Friday 20th September 2024, Q-Bot was excited to participate in TheHEAT Climate Technology Festival held at Harwell Science Campus. This immersive event, organised by the VOYAGERS Climate-Tech community, brought together 600 of the brightest minds working to tackle the climate crisis. The event was far from a standard tech conference — it was an all-encompassing, hands-on experience where climate-tech innovation met future-forward solutions in a dynamic setting.

We had the opportunity to showcase our underfloor insulation robots, meet incredible talents, and connect with potential customers and investors, all of whom are eager to elevate climate technology to the next level. The event was a bold, hands-on experience and was proudly described as the ‘anti-conference’, as it was designed to create natural networking without the rigid structure of the usual conference format.

From the official opening keynote to the closing evening party, TheHEAT was a celebration of both optimism and urgency, addressing the monumental task of combating climate change.

Key moments of the day included reconnecting with a long-time friend of Q-Bot—a key decision-maker who funded our very first Mark 1 robot. He was astonished by how far we’ve come since that initial milestone. Among the keynote speakers were prominent figures such as Henrietta Moon from Carbo Culture, Tessa Clarke of OLIO, and David Kim from CyanoCapture, who shared their groundbreaking work in carbon capture, the circular economy, and climate solutions. These short, lively presentations delivered impactful insights that left us energised and hopeful for the future of the climate-tech industry.

The festival wasn’t solely focused on technology; it was a cultural experience as well. Throughout the event, we were surrounded by vibrant art installations, curated by Leonora Chance, which reminded us that creativity and sustainability go hand in hand. From the striking “Cold Flux” art piece to the Tree of Hope (to which we were all encouraged to contribute), these visual elements helped create a space where science, art, and imagination could intertwine.

As the evening approached, the atmosphere shifted with a drumming circle and a witty, thought-provoking poem about the festival, written by the talented Hot Poets. We were treated to live music performances, including the blues and folk sounds of Blanche Ellis, creating an atmosphere of celebration and reflection. The day closed with a lively networking party featuring food trucks and more music, offering the perfect environment to relax, mingle, and continue discussions on climate innovation late into the night.

Attending TheHEAT Climate Technology Festival was a powerful reminder of the incredible potential we unlock when diverse minds come together to address the climate crisis. From robotics and future food to alternative materials and climate finance, the range of innovation on display was truly staggering. For Q-Bot’s Technology team, this event reaffirmed our commitment to driving meaningful change in the built environment through robotics and energy efficiency.

A special thank you to Patrick Meier, humanitarian and founder of the Climate Robotics Network, for inviting us to this wonderful event. And a massive thank you to the VOYAGERS Climate-Tech community for organising such an immersive, urgent, and action-packed festival.

Let’s keep TheHEAT on climate innovation!
